Updated 6/3: Security guard dragged by car

June 3, 2008

Two brothers were arrested Sunday in connection with the dragging of a security guard with a vehicle, according to a Palatine police report.

Brad A. Downey, 22, of 128 Glendale Road, Buffalo Grove, and his brother James C. Downey, 21, of 225 N. Elmwood Court, Palatine, were taken into custody at 2:05 p.m. Sunday following a report of theft and the dragging of the guard at Sears Essentials, 537 N. Hicks Road.

After being detained for shoplifting at Sears, the two men began fighting with the security guard, police said.

Brad Downey then drove his 1996 Chevrolet car at a high rate of speed with the passenger door open while the guard was holding onto the door, dragging him alongside the vehicle, according to the police report.

The passenger door reportedly struck two other vehicles in the parking lot, all with people nearby.

Later, the security guard picked Brad Downey out of a lineup after he came to the police station, police said.

Police apprehended James Downey at his residence. After being charged and released by police, James Downey yelled in the direction of the police station that he would puncture all the tires on the police vehicles in the parking lot, according to the police report. He was then arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. His next court date on that charge is July 8.

Brad Downey was charged with retail theft, disorderly conduct, battery, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in property damage.

James Downey was given the same charges, in addition to the disorderly conduct charge.

Both men are scheduled to appear in court July 17.
